The Runner by Hockers:

Firstly, I shall evaluate the suitability of the first track on our shortlist; 'The Runner' by Hockers. This track falls under several genres mainly alternative. Through the use of synthesizers and reverb this track gives connotations of almost a techno and dance category; this directly contrasts the soft guitar, drum and piano beginning which falls under a indie/alternative genre. In terms of how catchy the song is, there is a hook that catches the listeners attention, engaging them. In addition, there is a catchy and repetitive chorus that once again creates familiarity with the audience and the song. The track also has clear sections and structure, as there is an evident change in pace, volume and instruments, creating a different vibe and atmosphere to the song. There is a clear introduction, slowly bringing different instruments in making the song diverse and moving progressively into the chorus. There is a clear beat and rhythm to the song created through the use of the drum kit, which adds to the catchy feature of the track. In terms of lyrics, they are appropriate and not explicit, in terms of whether they are effective or inspiring, i feel they lack in this area. The emotion created by the lyrics is low, and they aren't moving or inspirational; in fact I would say they are repetitive and slightly boring. In terms ideas for a music video, the lyrics are about someone running, so we could do a sequence of running with fast paced editing, especially where the tempo and dynamics change and fluctuate.

Secondly, I shall be analysing the suitability of the second track, 'This Love' by Choose Wisely. Initially, I can understand that it falls under the Indie and Singer/Songwriter genre, this is evident through the instruments used and the lyrics. The lyrics are about love, which is a common convention of the indie genre, and the tone of voice is soft and easy to listen to. There is a clear introduction, demonstrated by the use of a keyboard and guitar that introduces the voice nicely, also the soft voice creates an easy listen and comfortable atmosphere. There is a catchy and repetitive chorus that is also a general convention of the indie genre; through the use of repetition, a sense of familiarity is created as the words 'This Love' become stuck in the listeners head and recognizable. In terms of dynamics, the track begins soft and soothing it then escalates with the use of a crescendo building up to a climax that then leads into the chorus, after the chorus ends the singer reverts back to the soft voice and slower tempo that was heard earlier in the song. A clear rhythm and beat is heard through the use of an electric guitar and drums, this also adds to the catchy feel of the song, as the beat is the same throughout the song, this ensures the song keeps in the listeners head. In terms of lyrics, they are very appropriate and have no explicit language, the lyrics themselves are repetitive yet do brew emotions to the listener. This is largely due to the fact it is about love, which is always a sensitive topic, the significance of this is the words of the song and the track itself can become personal to the listener which is important. Personally, I feel this song is the strongest out of all of our shortlist as there are various possible paths we could go down for the music video. I think that a nature setting, featuring a boy and a girl would suit perfectly, the editing would be quite slow and smooth, but would speed up as the music's volume increases.

Thirdly, I shall be discussing the third track on the list and it's suitability. The song begins slow with a clear introduction immersing the listener into the song through the use of song and high pitched lyrics. The beat to the song is catchy and repetitive, thus conforming to the indie/alternative genre. In addition there is almost an echo and synthetic atmosphere created through the slow and high pitched beat and lyrics. There is a clear crescendo building to the climax of the song which can be identified through the increased tempo and drum beat. The lyrics of the song are simple and appropriate, however the lyrics are quite generic and boring; they are not by any means inspiring or sentimental. In terms of ideas for this song, I have relatively nothing, I feel like when the song is slightly distorted and echoed we could incorporate shots underwater and when it is fast paced possibly have shots of a carnival or fast traffic.

The Psychopath Test by Thula Borah:

Finally, I shall be evaluating the fourth and final song, in my opinion this is the weakest one of the shortlist. It falls under the indie/rock genre as it follows the general conventions of the category, such as electric guitars, loud drums and a fast tempo. In terms of sections of the song, I feel like there is a clear introduction as the volume and tempo build up, however, apart from when the chorus is introduced and the volume and tempo rise, the song maintains a loose basic structure creating a generic and unfulfilling listen. There is a clear beat created by the drums and guitar, the drums dominate the track and make the lyrics hard to hear and understand. As the beat, rhythm and lyrics of the song are generic it's not particularly catchy or recognisable. In relation to the kind of music video ideas, I personally think there would be a large majority of band shots and possibly clips of a mosh pit, which would reflect the emotions and atmosphere created by the song.

In conclusion, I feel that 'This Love' seems like the most viable option, the reason for this being that there are various ideas that this song could help bring to life. For example, I feel that a beautiful scene of a boy and a girl being sentimental using immersing and personal camerawork, such as close ups, could produce a beautiful music video that would follow Goodwin's theory and conventions.
